Description:
Sulfur is an essential nutrient absorbed by plants mainly as sulfate (SO₄²⁻). Plants can also absorb small amounts through the leaves as sulfur dioxide (SO₂), sulfur trioxide (SO₃), or elemental sulfur. Within the plant, sulfur contributes to the formation of sulfur-containing amino acids such as cystine, cysteine, and methionine, which are key components of proteins.

Sulfur is involved in numerous enzymatic processes and, while mobile within the plant, it forms compounds rapidly and is thus less mobile than nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), or potassium (K). Sulfur deficiency symptoms resemble nitrogen deficiency, but sulfur deficiency is typically observed in younger leaves, whereas nitrogen deficiency appears in older ones.
