Description & Uses:
Ammonium chloride occurs naturally in volcanic regions, but is commonly produced synthetically as a by-product in various industrial processes, particularly in the Solvay process during sodium carbonate production. It is highly soluble in water and forms a mildly acidic solution. It has a wide range of applications:

• Industrial Uses:

  • Battery production (dry cells) and certain explosives

  • Galvanizing, tinning, and zinc coating (used as a flux)

  • Soldering flux to clean and prepare metal surfaces

  • Hardening agent for urea-formaldehyde resins in MDF, particle board, and plywood manufacturing

  • Drying agent for some synthetic adhesives

• Agriculture & Animal Feed:

  • Feed additive for cattle to prevent urinary stones

  • Fertilizer additive

  • Nutrient in yeast production

• Cosmetics & Cleaning:

  • Thickening agent in shampoos (when used with ALS surfactants)

  • Ingredient in various cleaning products

• Pharmaceutical & Food Applications:

  • Used as an expectorant in cough syrups, diuretic, and adjuvant
